MTTC Spanish – Learning Acquisition, Instruction & Assessment (028) Practice Test

Focusing on interactive speaking tasks—like information-gap activities, role-plays, and negotiation tasks—best captures how well a student can communicate in Spanish. These activities place learners in authentic conversational situations where meaning must be negotiated in real time, requiring turn-taking, clarification, paraphrasing, and adapting language to a partner. Using rubrics that emphasize interaction, accuracy, fluency, and varied vocabulary ensures the assessment covers both how accurately they convey ideas and how smoothly they communicate with others.

Other formats tend to measure isolated skills rather than actual spoken communication. Standardized grammar drills with no interaction assess knowledge of rules in isolation, not how well someone communicates. Silent reading with vocabulary recall focuses on receptive skills and retention, not speaking. Translation-only exercises gauge transfer between languages, not spontaneous conversation. Therefore, interactive speaking tasks provide the most valid measure of communicative competence in Spanish.
